The Ellen Macthur Foundation, founded by sailing champion Ellen Macthur, announced on Wednesday that four fashion giants will participate in the “Fashion Spin” campaign.

Participating brands, in partnership with HSBC, will have three years to devise practical measures to help eliminate waste in industry as well as production processes that pollute the environment.

Director of “Fashion Spin”, Francois Suchet, explains that the goal of the campaign is to create “a global movement”, aiming for an economy where clothes will never become waste.
To avoid wasting clothes, Mr. Suchet said the industry should focus on improving design, developing rental and resale businesses.
Some fast-fashion brands have encouraged customers to bring old clothes to collection points in stores.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation released a report last November, revealing that fabric washing alone releases 500,000 tons of microplastics each year, equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles, which are still floating in the ocean.
